The Math Department

The CTK Math Department prepares students to understand math models that will help them think critically in and out of the classroom. The curriculum focuses on algebra and geometry, as these are the fundamental prerequisites for advanced mathematics studies. The department faculty strives to assist every student to become fluent in the language of algebra and geometry, develop confidence in performing these equations, and achieve a lasting understanding of fundamental math concepts.

Courses offered by the Math Department at CTK

Math I: Algebra I
This course will use the language of algebra – its vocabulary, symbols, and reasoning – to solve problems, analyze data, and describe relationships and patterns. Students will learn to apply algebra to represent real life situations, building a solid algebraic foundation for subsequent math coursework.

Math II: Geometry
This course will encourage students to become effective oral and written communicators through the use of logical reasoning. Geometry students will be able to use visualization, spatial reasoning, and geometric modeling to solve problems. These skills will enable students to be successful in forming an argument and justifying it with evidence, which will be a valuable application to other high school and college courses.
 
Math III: Algebra II
This
 course complements and expands the mathematical content and concepts of Algebra I. Students’ knowledge of number systems will be expanded to included both real and imaginary number systems. Functions will be explored in depth through evaluation, composition, and both numerical and graphical representation. Other topics will include matrices, exponents, and radicals.

 

Math IV: Pre-calculus 
This course will explore, in depth, the topics of radicals and rational exponents, polynomial and rational functions, logarithmic and exponential functions, graphs and trigonometry. Students will discover how their algebraic foundation supports much of what they encounter in Pre-calculus. Students will also be able to apply mathematical concepts and formulas (i.e. population growth, compound interest) to real-life applications.

Math V: AP Statistics
The AP Statistics course introduces students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. There are four themes evident in the content, skills, and assessment in the AP Statistics course: exploring data, sampling and experimentation, probability and simulation, and statistical inference. Students use technology, investigations, problem solving, and writing as they build conceptual understanding.
