Foreign Language (Latin): Latin is an ancient language spoken first by theRomans in Italy. It then spread throughout the Roman Empire into Europe and parts of Asia and Africa. Latin was used long after the fall of the Roman Empire as a common international language for religious, mathematical, legal and scientific discourse. Latin is the foundation of all Romance languages, including French, Italian and Spanish, which evolved directly from Latin. Latin root words are the basis for approximately 70% of English words as well. The three-year Latin course at CtK stresses grammar, vocabulary and culture, and fosters skills which students can put to use in their future study of any language. Latin study will also provide a foundation for the study of Western literature, government, art, history, architecture, science, law and medicine. The study of Latin often leads to increased facility with the English language and grammar, strengthening of verbal skills tested in the SAT and ACT, as well as greater knowledge and appreciation of the ancient world and its contributions to our own.
