College Signing Day: Seniors Announce College Choice

“Hello, I’m Donovan and I’m going to set the world on fire at Morehouse College this fall!”

“My name is Jordan, and this fall I will be setting the world on fire at Howard University!”

“My name is Ravion, and I will be setting the world on fire at Boston College on a full scholarship!”

Monday, May 15th, was College Signing Day at Christ the King. These announcements and 69 others like them were delivered by proud members of the Class of 2017 to a packed gymnasium of parents and underclassmen. Excitement, pride, and accomplishment were all palpable as seniors stood up to announce their decision, students cheered for one another, and parents’ eyes welled up with tears.

For the 6th consecutive year, 100% of our 2017 graduates were accepted to college.  And for the second year in a row, 100% of our graduates were accepted to 4-year universities.  Finally, this class of seniors has earned over $5.5 million in college scholarships and financial aid.

While only 9% of low income students earn a bachelor’s degree by age 24, 93% of CTK alumni have enrolled in college.

There are many reasons for this record of success. First, we offer a rigorous, college prep education that challenges our students to strive for excellence in academics and extracurricular activities.  Our caring and supportive community is another reason students thrive here. Love, a member of the class of 2017 who will be attending Southern University and A&M College in the fall, attributed some of her success at CTK to our faculty.

“CTK has helped me grow in so many ways. In school, my self-worth and confidence has been elevated.

Instead of being lost in a large school, I have teachers who know me and care about me.”

Finally, our unique Corporate Work Study Program provides opportunities for our students to succeed. Each student learns new skills and is mentored by professionals while earning the majority of their CTK tuition. This experience compliments what our students are learning in the classroom and gives them an advantage entering the job market in the future.

Jordan, the senior attending Howard University in the fall, stood confidently at the microphone beaming from ear to ear and shared what is in store for his immediate future.

“I look for college to assist me in attaining the knowledge it takes to be a successful writer, how to master my craft in such a way that I am able to live comfortably, and happily. Ultimately, it is a scary process, yet I feel it will be rewarding. And so, the best is yet to come!”

As a school community, we are privileged to be able to work with such amazing students and their families. We are most proud of the Class of 2017 and believe the best is yet to come for each and every one of them!
