to offer being here my name is Temple pain on the principal at Christ the King Jesuit college prep and we have two current students and one of them joining us for a conversation so instead of introducing you guys I'll let you introduce yourself if your tell everyone your name the years you are and where you work or where you worked in the past Christian you want to start hello my name is Chris in Washington I'm a sophomore Christ the King and I work at William Blair my name is Micaiah McBride I'm a senior at Christ the King and I work at seeing eye research my name is Tony Ward and I'm in the love of Christ the King or graduate in 2012 and the last job I had with Christ the King was the Chicago History thank you all so you all are in different stages of your time with ttk so I'm sure we'll get to hear about their experiences and I like for this to just be a conversation so feel free to jump in at any time questions so McKayla if you would start tell us about any activities that you participate in at Christ the King Honor Society and also I'm a peer minister at the alright and tell us about being a minister what do you do with the Prime Minister and also we're kind of Outlets of the students they have anything going on at home or need to talk to anybody or under stress they come and talk to her or if anything their family has happened a lost or anything are the first to find out and where they're too get them to the hard time okay what do you like about being a peer Minister Baptist Church in at church I do a lot of all of the young people organizations and we're kind of help like the elders at our church and we talked to the younger kids and give them Bible lessons and everything so Christ the King I can kind of brain what I do charge to my school and that's a big plus for me thank you Christian tell us about what you do at Christ the King of football baseball and basketball I was on the mock trial team spoken word and Poetry Club and I'm on track to be a peer Minister for next year no number for students do to the awkward attendance Baisley will come in on a different schedule each week after school and just do different poetry spoken word hip-hop and rap workshops with one of our literature teachers who helps us out after school and then you also participated in ignatian family teaching right tell us a little bit about that weekend three days trip to Washington DC to a national conference on social injustice particularly on racism immigration and it was basically just a very eye-opening experience to go among around 2,000 other high school students from around the country and really bring these different issues the light and look at how different people come different areas and different backgrounds and how they come to understand these different issues and Tony so you're a c2k alarm for my wedding class the class of 2012 I love to hear some of your thoughts on your time BTK but first tell us where did you go to college and what was your major after I graduated from Christ the King I went to Monmouth College which is in Monmouth Illinois very small liberal arts school and I history in theater production right and what are you doing now right now I'm just doing a bunch of shows plays around the city of Chicago it's just did it takes up a lot of your time you can work on a plane anywhere from a month to 6 months so when I'm working all play it's usually another one that's sure to follow right after it's so currently I'm working on a show called The Cloud of women we just had a show on Saturday and we have another one coming up this weekend in Detroit all right so anybody out there with connections to theater production so tell me what was it like going to a brand new school being a Christ the King while laying the foundation it definitely had its challenges but we were very tight-knit everyone was really close the staff and faculty like the relationship they have the students was great we had some really good leaders I honestly don't think that I would have gone this far in Life or in my career if I hadn't had the leaders that I had a Christ the King we have some gray people to look up to while I was there and so tell us about your time with the corporate work-study program that was a really funny that was pretty cool too because of growing up my mom is an administrative assistant so I was always in office settings with her you know that the cubicles and the copy machines in the filing and things like that but it was definitely different actually doing that work and being a worker and slash coworker it was it was really interesting and it's helped me a lot of administration skills to excellent and so I'm sure you've seen a lot of changes during your time at ctk and McCoy I hear you're a senior about to graduate on your four years tell us a little bit about your knee is the CWS P program because the job I'm at now seeing eye research I kind of got up idea of what I want to go into in college and after college also with the teachers at Christ the King they're very helpful to the student and make sure that we in the classroom and if you have to go after school they're always available in with the college process it was very long filling out all those college application price of really has helped us they offer College counseling everything to figure out what college you want to go to and what we want to major in our financial aid and everything and also the Catholic part of it really helped because I enjoyed sending the masses and everything so Christ the King really has brought everything I love into one place with my classmates were more like a family and we're very close and we can talk to each other about anything do you think you'd be a different and if you hadn't attended ctk my other options I wouldn't have got involved as I am now at Christ the King I probably would have just been another student going through the four videos of high school not doing anything just ready to graduate and so we have signing day coming up soon as mr. Martin mention but I'm sure everyone is curious where you'll be going to school and what you're studying can you give us a preview University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and I'll be majoring in tender woman studies in a minor in sociology my alma mater don't talk a little bit about the college application process what other schools were you accepted to and why did you choose you will buy my first option since sophomore year when we drop my sister off I just knew I fell in love with the campus then I just know I wanted to go there and follow in her footsteps the other colleges I've been accepted to Western Illinois to Macomb Southern Alabama University of Kentucky if I was the one I was really waiting and wishing on I got to set up the wonderful I'm sure all the hard work that you've done these last 4 years paid the way for that so I'm very proud of you for that what are you most excited about in terms of going to college I'm most excited about freedom everyday is a very big campus so I know I'll find something to do everyday and I'm just excited to be down there with my sister also you know they have good education that I missed what I really enjoy doing and hopefully I find a career path that I enjoyed and what would you say you're most anxious about going to college I know it's going to be a lot of responsibility I'm not going to have someone to wake me up every morning I know the teachers they're not going to tell me when I have that I have late work or have do they sent to study and we have test on this day I know it'll be all on me to make sure I keep my grades up and be successful thank you Christian so you told me once before the ctk wasn't your first choice High School are you glad that you came to Christ the King I plan on growing a lot my first choices for high school where they well my big choices Lane tag Whitney Young you know the really prestigious Chicago high schools I feel like if I would have gone to school like that just like Micaiah said I would have just like falling into the mix not been not have been the impact on my school in any way and I feel like I'm going to Christ the King I'm able to make it being such a small school I'm able to make a really big impact on my school my classmates and really like the students voices are heard so cute I'm so like other Jesuit school Christ the King as a grad at grad or graduated graduation profiles can all of you tell us about what the rat is so the grata grabs are basically 6 principles that every Christ the King students should develop a and learn to embody by the time they graduate from Christ the King the six are religious loving intellectually competent committed to Justice positively work experienced and opened the growth and for the most part every student should just through their matriculation of high school and Justin bodies principals most exemplifies you for me open the Grove Isle taking a lot of opportunities at Christ the King and failed at even more and really I was just noticed that the big thing is not failing but the way that you react to that failure and build off of it for every assignment we do we have to put which one that we're feeling that day and I always put loving and open to Grove I'm always a loving person that's why I put the open to grow because I'm always open to new opportunities each assignment I do excelling in learning more so that's why I put open two girls and can you tell us a little bit about the growth and and I took two participated in that was a little bit out of your car yeah I went on a service appellate the Appalachian service projects and we went to Kentucky where the it was a part of the poverty level is very high and I know of the communion I come from it's not that great but going down there the houses and everything and I really got out of my comfort zone because I'm kind of a girly girl and I saw myself down there on the side of the roof color spelling Cameron and working with all these different things it rained everyday I'm scared of animals and it was like so many chickens I was just like oh my God do it myself I got over my fear of cats and chickens more than I am so yes I am Tony well when I was in high school my favorite one was always open to growth because we attend Christ the King you have to be open to every opportunity that they present to you because it's a lot of them but now that I've graduated from college I would say that at it's like she competent and ask you when I was in college I always thought about that because it's just so much to learn out there and then with the field that I'm in if I do have to know every single part you don't have to but for me it's like I would like to know have a hand in each pot just to see how everything works so I would say it's intellectually competent now thank you William Blair it's an investment banking I am tell us about it what do you do there so I work in the travel and Hospitality department and my day is kind of split in the two I'm in the morning we went out floors in a building from floors 35 to 50 and we have sort of like kittens on every level and me and one of my coworkers through always clean out all the machines. Coffee cups everything you know the small things to make everyone's day go right and then after my lunch break I come in and do some type of office work usually I'm it'll be different expensive just a little different project they needed help out with study program through the work-study program of definitely learned pay attention to detail there's just a lot things that may go unnoticed but I just feel like paying attention to detail really gives you a step above everyone mentioned a little bit about the receptionist a CEO so after lunch I usually go into expense reports and things like that I have a really kind of weird story when I was working at my old job UI lab so I was working at the reception desk and got a call that came in to be transferred to someone by the name of my Tio's name and at the time I didn't know the CEO didn't know you know anything about that so I transferred to call directly to the CEO and didn't know better assistant got the call luckily before I could get through to the CEO and you know I was when the security guard told me everything I was kind of nervous you know the CEO of my company was about to come speak to me about transferring to call to her know she could have been busy doing you know God knows what but it was really great to see came to me really nice for light just you know let me know you know don't do it again in a nice way so yeah that really great and tell me where did you work at cwsp jobs you want all three or it just the one. The different ones will freshman year I work at an engineering firm that was in Downers Grove but they opted out by the time I was a sophomore so myself junior year I work at a law firm downtown call Kelly John Warren and they just Baystate did corporate law it's really small office everyone is really nice and they don't treat me like a kid they treat me like a co-worker which is really nice and in senior year I worked at the Chicago History Museum which I actually asked for it because like I want to go to college and study anthropology so I thought it would be nice for me to be in that area and do you have any takeaways from your experience working as a high-school student it can be intimidating because if I you're just like this little 14 year old kids in the middle of downtown and it's like what do I do but it's like after first meeting not even after fresh meat you get the hang of it it's like go to school and go to work and then go home and do homework like if I can get to be a kid and then if I can get to CT you don't world to answer is it's a nice experience to be able kind of like not do both but like see the other side while you're still in school what about you where do you work and what did you learn through the USB program our Jesse in our research and it's a research come I really enjoy the qualitative research I've got to get on focus groups interview interview all respondents work with clients client calls do surveys in also words with the quantitative part in idea Sim data checking which really wasn't I know what I you are and what you don't like to do the marketing department and now packages and gifts to clients and everything so with working at C&R research I was kind of everywhere with what I want to study in college but with the qualitative I really got intrigued with that and now I kind of want to go into it in college and further study on Intuit wonderful I'm so this question is for all three of you what is affected you the most at ctk and in what way do you want to start I think I would say getting us a college because my senior year I was supposed to go to University of Iowa and I was all excited you know during Signing Day that's why I said I was going I had two t-shirt I went down there for registration and everything and got my ID got my room assignment have a roommate like I was just all set and ready to go but in the middle of the summer my financial aid package wasn't enough so like me and my family just started to panic like okay it's the middle of the summer like where am I going to go to school and my mom contest did Christ the King and she contacted our college counselor at that time and he's like over here is there schools that reopen the their application process and so he sent me like 5 schools and I have to the all of them and Mom is was one which I did not want to go to Mama's at all cuz we went on a college visit down there my junior year and I think collectively me and my cousin is just like all this is a nice campus but none of us want to go he so when I saw that it was one of those schools listed I was like whatever and I just like filled out just the basic application like where I live what school I went to and that was it but I was counseling at Christ the King is actually the one who sent them out transcripts and sent them an email letting them know how involved I was in Christ the King and I was this kind of stupid and I did this and I did that and that's how I got accepted so Christ the King is the reason why I went to Mom and then got into Mom's cuz with my application I don't think I would have got in if that college counselor hadn't stepped in and was like no ignore her this is what she does at Christ the King all right what's the fact that you most at cck and in what way the most will probably be the same program in the very hard curriculum it really taught me how to balance my time because it's like Tuesday okay we go to work then we come back to school on Wednesday you have 5 test so you we have to balance your time and make sure you're very organized and what you need to do with the going to work going to school is very hard at first as a freshman you have to really adjust and I really think I'm prepared for college now because of that and I know a lot of Lum Nuys they say that if you want to Christ the King then you're ready for college and I'm really excited because I feel like I have balance and I know how to organize myself really prepare with the things I need to do I'm always say mine is probably I will have to say two things that would be the teacher-student relationships and then also the grading scale as far as the teachers do relationships like all of my teachers aren't just teachers and you know academic like supervisors it's more like I can literally walk up to any of my teachers ask them about anything it's almost like being in a school full of counselors any of the Any teacher that I can walk up to and give me advice on anything all of my teachers that I have four classes everyday I would feel comfortable going up to an accident ething and they do a really good job at keeping that door open and really just being opening an invite all students as far as a grading scale so we do have a really tough grading scale it's a 6 point grading scale so I've seen plenty of students from other schools and play my friends that you don't have really high GPA and great gray and I'm like yeah that's failing at my school so yeah definitely rigorous course that pushes us to our best I was how to tell an incoming freshman just to basically be open to like I said before to be open to any opportunities at Christ the King offers you because they like any student they will pull them aside and just be like all hey I think this is great for you and it's like a the student don't turn it down just say yes even if it's not something that you're interested in this still say yes cuz you don't know where to leave or where it could take you mines will be the same it's at a opportunities with me wsp job they're actually offering me an internship so that's very exciting also with the service project that explains that really open me up to new things with the clubs and organizations the school really help me enjoy my high school experience and I'm very sad to be graduating but I'm more excited going to come also I was partially fade make sure to take opportunities so I was just paid to definitely be true to yourself throughout High School like just I mean there will be some opportunities that you may not be comfortable with or may not really want to take and I feel like it's just really important throughout High School to find yourself and what you want to do or at least outline what you want to do in the future and so Christian I understand that you prepared something special for us related to the grad at grad and kind of here on behalf of the spoken word and poetry team to put together a little piece about the grad at grad switcher the six principles we talked about so yeah just a little so we got grata grass that's graduate at graduation if you take time and patience and follow the Saint Ignatius principles and all these high schools Across the Nation you know the six qualities when you cross that stays and get your Ovation religious is the grad at grad I'm thinking we should start first build a connection with your inner self and always put your God first or flat like a ocean with water so blue and make sure to always respond when he's calling on you and Celexa Lily Compass it that's that's the big one to be, that is to say I'm starting to Mission and I'm stopping it Courage and determination yeah it takes a lot of it stated term mind your own mind if it takes time to make your own time and make smart choices academically through High School the whole time open to growth is just open the most opportunities you find them and you give him a step out of your comfort zone stop living a lonely route go home experience the world and find something to write home about being committed to Justice. Just is calling it as you see it and leaving other than 10 discussion stand up for the neighbor whatever you any quality waivers make your own actions and also praying to God that he save us positively work experience is a parent is something is complicated but I promise you was really not it's a learned from a job no matter if you take it for real or not you just learn your job and take the qualities with you lastly is B going to Beyond and above it for your heart into without and kids and learning to love like Jesus did understanding that love it several different pieces that I learned it with those pieces is Christian thank you open up to us today I'm sure I guess Larry enjoyed learning about you and thank you so much for being here today I speak for all of us at Christ the King when I say that we really appreciate you taking an interest in school and in our students and your support means a lot to help us do what we do for our students so thank you for that and so this concludes our program but if any of you would like to stay and have questions for R panel please raise your hand and then we can share the microphone and you can ask questions of our students here don't be shy you're still up and did a poem for a right I don't see any questions I have one here I have a question up here for microphone don't bring it I have a question just I'm curious to know what is the most valuable experience you had at your work programs like what was the thing that you found most valuable and that help you kind of grow as a person so my job before William Blair I worked at you at lab it wasn't really part of it was digital manufacturing Innovations so my freshman year I was really into engineering as my dad is an Alexa R & L Pawn my supervisor and co-workers finding out that I was in the engineering they actually planned an engineer Shadow day for me where they gave me an entire day for the Shadow the engineers go through their you know daily work schedule and Baseline along with them learn all the different things that they go through in their job and I feel like it was a really unique experience because I don't think that there's a lot of people my age that would get to sit with Engineers who are actually working now be able to ask them anything learn about anything that they like to and I just think my supervisor so much for giving me the opportunity ask me updates on everything that's going on is she really has been a mentor to me this whole school year and I really thank her for that and also she has guided me through the college process helping me out and giving me advice and telling me her story about what she when she went to college and it really has been no motivation to me I think of mine would be my job is really taught me how to be detail-oriented and efficient when I'm doing my work cuz there's always a ready to get things done in a faster way too so just too but to also make sure that you're doing everything right I'm curious how you all build community among one another instead of the typical high school where everybody feels like they're competing with one another and how is it that you build community within your class I would say part of is that it's a generally small school signing for the most part you will typically see everyone in the school at some point you know throughout the day throughout the week I think the big thing is the different events that we have our masks are different Talent showcase something for that sort that really seem to bring us together because you take all of the students and bring them into the gymnasium like this one area and we all just get to throughout these masses reflect on different things and really you know just come as a laughing out of school and I'll look at these different points and how we all related them a different ways 312 overnight retreat can we really just it's a break from school and he gets his press what we're going through and how we feel and also I believe through advisory we have advisory families we go through before and after lunch that we can talk to one another and it's just like a chill down from the normal class day I would say for my class since we had to go through so many changes it was just the just really got toast and every year Christ the King does a retreat for each class and during those Retreats is when you really get to know your fellow students so by the time you're here you're calling to fight you know each other pretty well so it's like you just want the best for each other what thank you all again for being here please don't forget to fill out the cards on the table so that we can keep in touch with you and I extend an invitation to visit the school if you have
