good evening ladies and gentlemen I hope you are doing well tonight first I want to thank you so much find me to speak at this wonderful event I can get Hearts Gala how many parts rice to my head if I thought of what to say I can honestly talk about anything I want but I want to talk about how Christ the King has brought me so far in such a short time my name is Michael Vartan I'm a senior at ctk I'm student body president I'm the youngest of three siblings and I live with my grandma on the westside of Chicago I'm 17 years old which account is such a blessing when I look around my neighborhood I see that not many teams make it to my age many young man result to drug abuse organ violence do the challenges with identity belonging and the hundred Dome so greatly for they never have the chance to make it to the states I'm forever grateful for my life and I'm grateful. I've had a home at 50k for these past four years and my friends and teachers have been support team coming to ctk I'm just fresh out of middle school and boy does he think I seem like the biggest school ever had anxiety for nights thinking about high school I don't know if it was just me but have the Middle School I thought high school is going to be just like High School Musical dancing singing and acting during passing periods but I was wrong it's a lot of work lucky for me as a freshman I also didn't realize there was a counseling team Google talk to about everything bring my sophomore year I have lost a close friend are passing affected the whole school me and my grief for my friend a spark pass, of me losing my parents when I was younger I lost my parents it wasn't easy at all in fact it took a lot out of me I love my parents they were my best friend so I shut down for years and in many ways I still feel closed off to this day I need somebody to talk to so I took it up with the counseling office I started to talk to one of my ctk counselors Miss nose she helped me fully cope with the loss of my friend and also understand that it's okay to get sap I want to miss nose one day and told her everything I was feeling and she responded with some words that I will never forget I know that you feel tired I know what you feel like School address we get up get up and do something productive keep yourself happy do what makes you happy listen I was helping me a lot and truly show me that everything was going to be okay from that point smells like my best friend I'm talk to her about school and we will set up goals for myself inside and outside the classroom when I first started SUV game I didn't have the best grades so we worked on improvements each year outside of the classroom Miss knows when the first person that helped me come out to my grandma for a long time I felt like I was living a double life I'll be completely myself at the school and all myself down when it was time to go home work and find the strength Within Myself it was I was able to fully come out to my grandma and be fully myself it was like finally being able to breathe after holding your breath for such a long time as you can tell what's a lot of help and perseverance I've grown a lot since my freshman year I am not ready to the confidently pursue my dream of becoming a pediatric surgeon this is always my dream but when my parents passed away even more inspired because my parents passed away they were my inspiration my parents are my why they gave me the strength to know that I can pursue my dream and in my experience to the corporate work-study program I think I gave me the confidence to excel in any professional environment in the fall I'll be taking the first step by moving to New Orleans to attend Xavier University of Louisiana to major in biology and pre-med I chose Xavier University because they're the only Catholic HBCU they have been number one for producing black doctors for the past 20 years and many medical schools look for Xavier alumni finding Jasmine graduation I know that I would have not made it this far without the support from seed to get knowing that I'm fully embraced and accept it knowing that things are going to be all right even when times are hard I'm ready to embark on this journey thank you
